Staying Safe Online
The internet is like a giant city โ full of amazing places, and a few tricky corners. Learn how to protect your secrets, be kind, spot fakes, keep viruses away, look after your health, and see how computers help everyone in daily life.
1Be a good digital citizen
A citizen is a member of a town or country who follows its rules and cares for others. When you use computers, phones and the internet, you become a digital citizen. A good digital citizen is safe, kind, honest and responsible online.
Google's Be Internet Awesome programme sums it up in five simple rules:
| Be Internetโฆ | Means |
|---|---|
| ๐ง Smart | Share with care โ think before you post. |
| ๐ Alert | Don't fall for fake โ spot tricks and false news. |
| ๐ช Strong | Secure your secrets โ use strong passwords. |
| ๐ Kind | It's cool to be kind โ never be mean online. |
| ๐ฆ Brave | When in doubt, talk it out โ tell a trusted adult. |
Your digital footprint
When you walk on wet sand you leave footprints. Online, everything you post, like, share, comment, search and every photo you upload leaves a trail too. This trail is your digital footprint. It can stay for years, and other people (even future schools) may see it.
Before you post, ask: Is it true? Is it kind? Would I be happy if my teacher or grandparent saw it? If not โ don't post it.
2Strong passwords & safe sign-in
A password is a secret code made of letters, numbers or symbols. It keeps your computer, phone, online accounts and schoolwork safe โ just like a key keeps your house safe. If someone learns it, they can open your account, change or delete your work, or pretend to be you.
โ Do's
Make passwords with at least 8 characters, mixing capital letters, small letters, numbers and symbols (like R@inBow56!). Use a different password for each account. Change them often. Keep them secret (you may tell your parents).
โ Don'ts
Never share your password with friends. Don't use simple ones like 123456, password, your name or birthday. Don't use the same password everywhere. Don't stick it on a note on the monitor. Don't ignore warnings about strange activity on your account.
Think of a sentence only you know: "My dog Bruno eats 2 bananas every day!" Take the first letters and keep the number and symbol: MdBe2bed! โ long, mixed and easy for you to remember.
Signing in to Windows safely
Windows 10 gives several sign-in options (Settings โ Accounts โ Sign-in options):
| Option | How you sign in |
|---|---|
| Windows Hello Face | A special camera recognises your face. |
| Windows Hello Fingerprint | You scan your fingerprint. |
| Windows Hello PIN | A short number instead of a long password. |
| Security Key | A small USB device you plug in. |
| Password | A regular password of letters, numbers and symbols. |
| Picture Password | You choose a picture and draw gestures on it โ circles, straight lines and taps. |
Face and fingerprint use parts of your body; this is called biometrics.
Leaving your seat? Switching off only the monitor does not protect you โ your account is still open! Press Windows + L to lock the computer, or sign out.

3Private information, tricks & safe websites
Personal information is anything that tells strangers who you are or where to find you. People online are not always who they say they are โ a "10-year-old gamer" could really be an adult.
"The player seems nice, so it's okay to tell my school name." โ No! Never share personal details with people you meet online, however friendly they seem, and never agree to meet them. Tell a parent or teacher.
Tricks and traps: phishing and scams
Phishing (said "fishing") is a trick where a message pretends to be from someone you trust so that you give away passwords or details. Warning signs:
- "You have won a free phone! Click here!" โ prizes you never entered for.
- "Hurry, your account will close today!" โ pressure to act fast.
- Asking for your password or OTP. Real companies never ask for your password by email.
- Spelling mistakes, strange sender addresses, or links that look almost right.
What to do: don't click the link, don't reply, and show it to a parent or teacher.
Is this website safe?
Don't fall for fake
Not everything online is true. Fake news is false information made to look real. Before you believe or share something, check: Who made this? Is it an official site (.gov, .edu)? Do other trusted sources say the same? If you are unsure โ don't forward it.
A message says: "Your game account will be deleted in 1 hour! Type your password here to save it." What is this most likely to be?
4Cyberbullying, netiquette & asking for help
Cyberbullying is bullying using phones, computers or games โ sending mean messages, spreading rumours, sharing embarrassing photos, or leaving someone out on purpose. It hurts just as much as bullying face to face.
Replying with even meaner messages, forwarding them to the class, or quietly deleting your account and telling no one are all wrong. The best answer always includes telling a trusted adult. And if you see someone else being bullied, be an upstander: support them and tell an adult.
Netiquette โ good manners online
Netiquette = net + etiquette (good manners). Treat people online the way you want to be treated.
- Don't type in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS โ it looks like SHOUTING.
- Be polite: use "please" and "thank you", and no rude words.
- Respect others' privacy: don't share someone's photo or message without asking.
- Don't spread rumours or forward chain messages.
- Write a clear subject line in emails and keep messages short.
When something feels wrong
If you see something scary, rude or confusing, or someone asks you to keep a secret from your parents: close it, don't reply, and tell a trusted adult โ a parent, teacher or elder. You will not be in trouble for asking for help. When in doubt, talk it out!
Rohan writes in a group chat: "WHO TOOK MY PENCIL BOX". What is the problem with his message?
5Viruses, malware & antivirus
A computer virus is a harmful program that can copy itself and spread from computer to computer. It can slow the computer down, damage or delete files, or steal information. All kinds of harmful software are together called malware (malicious software).
- Virus
- Attaches itself to files and spreads when they are shared.
- Worm
- Spreads by itself across a network.
- Trojan horse
- Pretends to be a useful program (like a "free game") but hides something harmful โ named after the wooden horse in the old Greek story.
- Spyware
- Secretly watches what you do and steals information.
How do viruses spread?
Through downloads from unknown websites, email attachments from strangers, infected pen drives, and clicking pop-ups or fake ads.
Antivirus software
Antivirus software finds and removes viruses and other malware, and blocks new ones. Examples: Microsoft Defender (built into Windows Security), Quick Heal (made in India), Norton and McAfee. Its icon often sits in the notification area of the taskbar.
๐ก๏ธ Keep it on
Keep the antivirus switched on and updated. Never turn it off to "install something faster".
๐ Ask first
Always ask a parent or teacher before downloading any game, app or file.
๐ Scan pen drives
Scan a pen drive with antivirus before opening its files.
๐ง Unknown attachments
Don't open attachments or links from people you don't know.
A "FREE super game" turns out to be a program that secretly harms the computer. This kind of malware is called a:
6Copyright & plagiarism
Writers, artists, photographers and musicians own the things they create. Copyright (symbol ยฉ) is the law that protects their work, so others cannot copy it and use it as their own without permission.
Plagiarism means copying someone else's words, pictures or ideas and pretending they are yours. It is dishonest โ even if you change the font colour!
โ๏ธ Use your own words
Read, understand, close the page, then write what you learnt.
๐ Give credit
Mention your source: "Source: www.isro.gov.in". This is called citing.
๐ผ๏ธ Use free pictures
Use pictures that are free to share (like Creative Commons) and still credit the creator.

7Healthy screen habits
Using a computer the right way keeps your eyes, back and wrists healthy. Arranging your desk and chair to fit your body is called ergonomics.
- Take short breaks; stand up and stretch. Don't play or watch for hours without a break.
- Blink often and use good lighting โ no bright window glare on the screen.
- Keep a safe distance; don't sit very close to the screen.
- Keep food and drinks away from the keyboard.
- Stop screens an hour before bedtime for good sleep, and balance screen time with play, reading and family time.

8Computers in daily life
Computers are everywhere โ often hidden inside machines we use every day.
๐ซ Schools
Smart classes, online lessons, presentations, keeping marks and attendance, school websites.
๐ฆ Banks
Keep account records. An ATM (Automated Teller Machine) gives cash any time of day. Net banking and UPI let people pay from their phones.
๐ฅ Hospitals
Store patient records and run machines for scans (like X-ray, CT and MRI) and tests. Robots even help in surgery โ but doctors make the decisions.
๐ Railways & airlines
Reservation systems let people all over India book tickets online at the same time, and show train timings.
๐ฆ๏ธ Weather
Forecasting cyclones and heavy rain needs supercomputers to study huge amounts of data about air, clouds and oceans.
๐ Space (ISRO)
Computers design rockets, guide launches and control satellites and missions like Chandrayaan.
๐ Shops
Barcode readers and billing machines add up your shopping quickly and keep count of stock.
๐ Homes & fun
Microwaves, washing machines, smart TVs, games, music, video calls with grandparents.
๐ญ Offices & factories
Letters, accounts and designs in offices; robots and machines controlled by computers in factories.
What computers are good at โ and not
| Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|
| Speed โ millions of calculations in a second | No IQ โ cannot think for itself; only follows instructions |
| Accuracy โ no mistakes when instructions and data are right | GIGO โ Garbage In, Garbage Out: wrong input gives wrong output |
| Diligence โ never gets tired or bored | No feelings โ cannot feel happy, sad or kind |
| Storage โ remembers huge amounts of data | Needs electricity to work |
| Versatility โ can do many different jobs | Cannot make its own decisions like humans |
